Plato Tectonics/ video installation
Decontextualizing the “Allegory of the cave” by Plato, this installation transformed an underground public hallway in Montreal into a magical subterranean theater. Filled with moving silhouettes of passersby inter-playing with video shadows of ordinary and not ordinary people and creatures projected onto a gigantic paper sculpture, “Plato Tectonics” examined the flexible relationship between actual and metaphorical phenomena. It offered an unexpected and interactive experience that invited participants to explore the notion of “stability” – presented here as multifaceted, fractal, and constantly in flux. Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” speaks brilliantly to our perception of physical forms, our knowledge, and our fears. What defines stability? Are our uncertainties permanent? What is in the core of our fear of foreigners and strangers? In this installation, visitors were invited to contemplate these questions while moving through a cave of shadows and light.
